Water Quality
How's the river?
OARS has been monitoring water quality since 1992 with the help of our Water Quality Citizen Scientist volunteers. Find out how you can get involved.
The Clean Water Act mandates that states compile a list waterbodies projected to fall short of water quality standards, rendering them unable to support designated activities such as fishing, recreation, drinking water supply, or aquatic life support. Every two years, states pinpoint all such impaired waterbodies in an Integrated List of Waters and prioritize the development of pollutant loading studies (TMDLs) based on the severity of pollution and the sensitivity of each waterbody’s use. The primary goal of the TMDL study is to identify pollution sources and corrective actions.
The Massachusetts Integrated List of Waters, (the “303d List,”) identifies segments of the Sudbury, Assabet, and Concord rivers. The primary issues affecting the identified river segments include:
- Eutrophication (Assabet River)
- Dissolved Oxygen (Assabet River)
- Bacteria (Assabet and Concord rivers)
- Phosphorus (Assabet and Concord rivers)
- Algae (Assabet and Concord rivers)
- Mercury in Fish (Sudbury and Concord rivers)
- Invasive Plants (All 3 Rivers)
* See our water quality parameters page for more information on each
Additionally, many ponds and lakes within the watershed are listed for a variety of pollutants. A Nutrient TMDL has been completed for the Assabet River to address these impairments.
